35th Heartland Music Festival wraps up

INDIANAPOLIS — The Heartland Film Festival wrapped up its 11-day run Sunday, showcasing more than 100 independent films in local movie theatres.

The buzzworthy lineup features “I Play Rocky,” “Jimmy” and “Wild Horses 9.”

Attendee Courtney Trachsel said, “It’s really cool to be the first people to see something like that and to be in Indianapolis where people don’t think about Indianapolis as a film hub, but it really is.”

Heartland organizers said the festival has showcased films that do more than entertain for 35 years.

On its closing day, the festival awarded $60,000 in cash prizes to filmmakers and spotlighted eight Indiana-made films, including “Street Angel,” which follows a former drug dealer walking a path of faith.

“It means a lot. It’s a very big situation for me and my team. A lot of movies don’t make it in Heartland so for our first film to be here, it’s a big deal,” Richard Taylor, an actor in “Street Angel,” said.

The festival’s Pioneering Spirit Award went to actor Will Poulter, known for roles in “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “The Maze Runner.”

His film “Union City,” about brothers navigating rehab in the Midwest, also played at the festival. “It means a lot that Heartland recognize the work we did. I think its really important that if were talking about emerging voices, people with stories to tell independent film is often the door in,” Poulter said.

Attendees and filmmakers said the festival opens doors.
